Benjamin was employed by W. P. Wharton of Groton as yacht Captain for forty-two years. He was Alderman from Ward 1 for several years. It was through his efforts that the Park at Ryal Side, which bears his name, was made possible. He purchased the site for the purpose of beautifying that section and later turned it over to the City for the same price that he paid for it, this making it possible for the creation of a recreation park. At an impressive ceremony held at the park on July 4, 1940, a portrait of Mr. Ober was unveiled and presented to Starr M. King, Superintendent of Schools, to be hung in the Ryal Side School. A eulogy written by Mr. Calvin P. Pierce, a life long friend of Mr. Ober, was read by the Secretary of the Ryal Side Men's Civic Association.

Benjamin is buried in the Central Cemetery, Beverly, MA ‎(Photo of Headstone)‎.
